is the most western town of the Silver Coast. Peniche and the sea are inseparable. It is one of the largest traditional fishing ports in Portugal and an important Atlantic hub for maritime tourism activities. Before going to the beach, you can walk through the historic center of Peniche. Besides the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Sanctuary, the São Pedro and Misericórdia churches, the Peniche Fortress is a must-see. It was built in the 16th/17th century to defend the coast, along with the fortress on Consolação beach and the fortress on Berlengas Island. It played an important role at various points in Portuguese history, but its most recent purpose was to serve as a political prison under the Estado Novo regime, where some of the most important public personalities in the fight against fascism were held. Once inside you will learn all about it as it is currently the city museum of Peniche. On both sides of the Peniche peninsula you will find beautiful white surfing beaches. These beaches are very popular with surfers because of the great waves. In Peniche you can take a boat to Berlenga Island.
